Google Business Profile Checklist: How to Rank Higher on Google Maps

When someone nearby searches for your service, the Google Maps results decide who gets the call. Use this checklist to make your Google Business Profile work harder.

For local businesses — clinics, restaurants, salons, service providers, coaching classes — the Google Maps “local pack” is often the most valuable spot on the results page. It appears above regular results and puts your phone number one tap away. Your Google Business Profile is what powers that listing.

Google ranks local results on three broad factors: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (how well known and trusted your business is). You cannot change distance, but you can improve the other two. Here is the checklist we use.

1. Get the basics exactly right

  • Business name: use your real-world name. Adding keywords to the name can get your profile suspended.
  • Primary category: choose the most specific category that describes your main service. This is one of the strongest relevance signals.
  • Secondary categories: add other genuine services you offer.
  • Phone, website and hours: keep them accurate, including holiday hours.

2. Fill in services and products

Add each service with a short, helpful description. This gives Google more context about what you offer and helps you appear for more specific searches.

3. Write a helpful business description

Explain what you do, who you serve and what makes you different in plain language. Mention your main services naturally — no keyword stuffing.

4. Add real photos regularly

Upload photos of your premises, team, work and products. Profiles with fresh, genuine photos look more trustworthy to customers and show Google the business is active.

5. Publish Google posts

Share offers, updates, events and recent work as posts. Regular posting keeps your profile active and gives customers more reasons to choose you.

6. Build a steady flow of reviews

  • Ask every satisfied customer for a review — share a direct review link on WhatsApp.
  • Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and promptly.
  • Never buy reviews or offer incentives; it violates Google's policies.

7. Keep your details consistent everywhere

Your business name, phone and website should match across your website, social profiles and directories like Justdial and IndiaMART. Consistent citations strengthen trust.

8. Connect your website

A fast website with a page for each service, local content and LocalBusiness schema markup supports your profile's relevance and prominence.

9. Answer questions

Monitor the Q&A section and answer common questions yourself before someone else does.

10. Track and improve

Check profile insights each month: searches, calls, direction requests and website clicks. Double down on what drives action.
